Pete Bird of Pete Bird Kitchens & Bathrooms - from one van to a family showroom
Six years ago, we first caught up with Pete Bird when he was building a reputation as a trusted local property maintenance company. Since then, a lot has changed. Today, Pete and his wife, Ewelina, run a family kitchen and bathroom showroom in Yaxley, helping homeowners across Peterborough create beautiful spaces while taking the stress out of the entire process.
We sat down with Pete to find out how the business has evolved and what continues to drive him today.
Tell us a little about yourself
I'm Pete, owner of Pete Bird Kitchens & Bathrooms. We're a family-run business based in Yaxley, and together with my wife, Ewelina, we help homeowners design, supply and install kitchens and bathrooms throughout Peterborough and the surrounding villages (PE1 - PE9).
Although our business has grown a great deal over the years, our values haven't changed. We still believe in treating every customer's home with respect, communicating honestly and delivering work we'd be proud to have in our own home.
Looking back, how has the business evolved?
When I first started, it was just me, a van and a handful of tools carrying out general property maintenance. Every happy customer led to another recommendation, and before long we found ourselves specialising more and more in kitchens, bathrooms and larger home improvement projects.
As demand grew, so did the team. We invested in experienced tradespeople, better systems and, eventually, our own showroom. Looking back, it's amazing to see how far we've come, but it's been built one customer at a time.
What inspired you to open your own kitchen and bathroom showroom?
Opening our showroom had always been a dream rather than simply the next step in business. We wanted somewhere customers could visit, take their time, see products in person and discuss ideas without any pressure. Too many people were trying to choose colours, finishes and layouts from brochures or websites, and we knew there had to be a better way.
The showroom allows us to offer the complete service - from the first design ideas right through to the finished installation - all under one roof. It has completely changed the experience for our customers.
What has been your proudest achievement?
Without doubt, building a business that people genuinely trust. When customers invite you into their homes, they're placing a huge amount of trust in you, and that's something we never take for granted. Knowing that so much of our work comes from recommendations, returning customers and positive reviews is probably the achievement I'm most proud of.
I'm also incredibly proud to be building the business alongside my wife. We've both invested a huge amount into creating something we're passionate about.
What makes Pete Bird Kitchens & Bathrooms different?
We don't simply sell kitchens or bathrooms—we manage the entire project. From the initial design and product selection through to organising the trades, managing the schedule and completing the finishing touches, our customers have one team looking after everything.
Many people tell us they've heard horror stories about chasing different trades or trying to coordinate everything themselves. Our aim is to remove that stress and make the whole process as straightforward as possible.
Being a family business also means our reputation matters. Every customer is important to us because our name is above the door.
Who are your typical customers?
We work with all sorts of homeowners, but many of our customers simply want someone they can trust to take care of everything. Some are busy families, while others are retired couples finally creating the kitchen or bathroom they've always wanted. Whatever their situation, most people appreciate having one experienced company managing the project from beginning to end.
What do customers worry about most before starting a project?
Interestingly, it's rarely about choosing tiles or worktops. Most people worry about whether the company will turn up when they say they will, whether the project will run smoothly, whether there will be unexpected costs and whether they'll be left with problems afterwards. That's why we spend so much time communicating with customers before work even begins. We believe people should know exactly what to expect throughout the whole journey.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
Seeing the transformation. It's always rewarding handing over a finished kitchen or bathroom and seeing the customer's reaction. Many people have lived with an outdated or impractical room for years, so being able to completely change how they use and enjoy their home is incredibly satisfying. No two projects are ever the same, which keeps every day interesting.

What advice would you give someone thinking about a new kitchen or bathroom?
Don't rush. Take the time to meet the company you'll be working with, ask plenty of questions and make sure
you're comfortable with the people who'll be in your home. The cheapest quote isn't always the best value. A kitchen or bathroom is something you'll hopefully enjoy for many years, so choosing a company you trust is every bit as important as choosing the products themselves.
What does the future hold for Pete Bird Kitchens & Bathrooms?
We're excited about the future. We'll continue investing in our showroom, growing our fantastic team and helping more local families create kitchens and bathrooms they'll love.
Our goal has never been to become the biggest company. We'd much rather be known as one of the most trusted.
