Air conditioning – beating the heat in summer and providing comfort all year round

WE all know just how unpredictable the British weather can be – even in the height of summer.

Some days it can feel more like winter while other days the heat can lead to uncomfortable working, living and sleeping conditions that leave us exhausted, unable to concentrate and irritable.

With increasing hot spells and soaring temperatures in recent weeks, Government experts have warned that air conditioning will soon be "unavoidable" to protect many Britons from unbearable summer heat.

They have called for maximum temperature regulations at work, cooling in hospitals and care homes by 2035 and in schools by 2050 – with suggestions that the school year should be shifted to better suit exam conditions.

But once seen as a luxury and unaffordable, air conditioning is becoming much more mainstream as homeowners reap the many benefits of AC all year round including:

Regulated temperature and comfort - air conditioning systems provide a consistent and comfortable indoor environment. Whether it’s sweltering summer heat or chilly winter days, it ensures that your home remains at an optimal temperature.

Humidity control - air conditioners help regulate humidity levels. High humidity can lead to discomfort, mould growth, and damage to furniture. By dehumidifying the air, AC units create a healthier living space.

Improved air quality - modern air conditioning systems come equipped with high-density filters. These filters effectively extract dust particles, allergens, and even viruses from the air.

Enhanced concentration and mental wellbeing - stifling heat can affect concentration and productivity. Air conditioning keeps your mind sharp by maintaining a comfortable environment. Whether you’re working from home or relaxing, a cool space promotes mental wellbeing.

Fewer insects and parasites - cooler indoor temperatures discourage pests. Air conditioning creates an inhospitable environment for insects, allowing you to enjoy a bug-free home.

Energy efficiency - while air conditioning units consume electricity, their efficiency has improved significantly. Choose an energy-efficient system to keep running costs low.

Year-round comfort - modern AC systems offer both cooling and heating functions. So, whether it’s a scorching summer day or a chilly winter night, your air conditioner has you covered.

As well as the immediate benefits of air conditioning, whatever the season, it can also save you money – in many cases being more energy efficient than central heating, particularly in light of the rising cost of fuel.

For assistance with installing air conditioning in your home or office, Dow’s Air Conditioning Services, a trusted member of Safe Local Trades can guide you through the process and ensure you find the best solution for your cooling needs.

In the meantime, here are our top tips to stop tempers, as well as temperatures, rising in your home:

  • Stopping the sun from entering a room will help keep things cool, so close curtains and blinds during the day.
  • Opening the windows later in the evening, when the air is cooler, will help to cool the in your home.
  • Try some DIY air con – fill up a cup with ice or crushed ice and breathe onto it. As the air from your breath is cooled by the ice, it will be directed back onto your face OR place a large bowl of ice in front of a regular fan to mimic the effect of air conditioning.
  • Turn off any electrical items, such as light and monitors, that aren’t being used. This will not only reduce the heat in the room but save on electricity.
